The Central Otago Whitewater Club has taken another step towards its goal of building a whitewater course on the Hawea River by applying for Queenstown Lakes District Council consents recently.

The facility was negotiated with Contact Energy during mediation for hydro-electricity consents and Contact has given $100,000 so far towards the project.

The Otago Regional Council approved the project and signed off water, land use and discharge consents in November last year after a notified hearing.

The district council consents relate to issues to do with earthworks, the carpark near Camphill Bridge, a public toilet, footpaths and vehicle crossing access.

There have also been negotiations with the Department of Conservation and a private landowner and the club hopes the district council process can proceed without notification, or at least limited notification.

Club spokesman Gordon Rayner, of Alexandra, said he did not know when construction would begin but hoped the course could be built by next summer.

The club was "pretty excited" and was looking forward to getting consent. The course would be the first of its type in Australia and New Zealand and create a resource for kayakers of all ages, Mr Rayner said.
