Charter business operator accused of pocketing fees

A Queenstown based fishing guides and charter business operator has been arrested for not issuing fishing licences to clients and pocketing their fees.

Queenstown police said the 52-year-old faced four charges of causing loss by deception.

Detective Matthew Jones said the man operated a fishing guides and charter business, which included a boating trip, guiding, use of fishing equipment and a 24-hour fishing licence.

It was alleged that the man failed to issue fishing licences to clients, pocketed the $19 fee which was payable to Fish and Game Otago.

Mr Jones said a private investigation firm was contracted by Fish and Game Otago to investigate allegations of dishonesty in January.

The investigation, called Operation Catfish, was ongoing and further charges could follow.

The arrested man would appear in Queenstown District Court on Monday.
