Drink-driving disappointing

Queenstown police say they caught 11 people drink-driving in the resort at the weekend.

Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said seven drivers provided breath tests over the 400mcg conviction limit and two elected to have blood tests.

The highest breath test reading was recorded by a 23-year-old Queenstown man who was stopped after a slow-speed 2.5km chase at 2.30am on Saturday. His breath-alcohol level was 846mcg and he elected to have a blood test.

''We spotted him weaving over the road at the BP roundabout in Frankton,'' Sgt Watt said.

Police followed the man and pulled him over.

The man's licence was suspended for a month and he will appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.

An Arrowtown man had the second highest level, 811mcg, when stopped in Bedford St on Saturday night.

The man appeared before a registrar yesterday and will appear again on Monday.

Officers also issued tickets to three drivers over the 250mcg legal limit but below 400mcg, and processed a 19-year-old allegedly over the under-20 zero limit.

''We're extremely disappointed the message regarding drink-driving is not getting through,'' Sgt Watt said.

The Invercargill booze bus was in the resort for the weekend but the police communications manager was unable to provide details of how many drink-drivers were caught, as the officers involved were on days off after working the weekend.
