The school holidays have been a time of learning for motorists, who are being educated about the correct speed when driving past a school bus, and when school starts again next week there should be no excuses for not knowing the rules.

Two flashing signs in strategic locations advising that the speed limit when passing stationary school buses is 20kmh are helping to spread the message.

Next week police officers will be out in force in Queenstown, making sure drivers are obeying the rule.

The rule applies to all school buses picking up or dropping off school children and is to ensure children can get on and off buses safely.

Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Watt said many motorists were unaware of the rule and this week's campaign was a cautionary phase before next week's blitz.

''Any motorists found exceeding [the speed limit] will be issued with an infringement notice,'' Act Sgt Watt said.

Motorists who exceed the 20kmh limit can expect fines of up to $630 and those who pass at higher speeds could lose their driver's licence for 28 days.
