Flying visit for Air NZ

The board of Air New Zealand will meet tourism operators in Queenstown tomorrow, then hold its monthly meeting in the resort on Friday.

Between 50 and 90 accommodation providers, skifield representatives, activity and hospitality operators were invited to the informal function.

The board had held board meetings in several centres, including Rotorua and Christchurch, as part of its mandate to maintain close contact with local operators, Air NZ spokeswoman Lara Harrison said.

Communications manager Mark Street said the airline "invests heavily in promoting Queenstown both domestically and in Australia".

Earlier this month, Air NZ lodged an Environment Court appeal against Queenstown Airport Corporation's decision on a notice of requirement for a designation alteration to provide for a runway end safety area (resa).

QAC chief executive Steve Sanderson said the resa appeal "will probably come up in conversation" when he welcomed "our biggest customer", but declined to comment further.

Queenstown Chamber of Commerce chairman Alastair Porter said it was important the carrier and operators worked together to lessen the impacts of the economic downturn.

"We appreciate the opportunity to have dialogue and hear what they say.

"I'll have questions along the lines of what we can do as a town to help Air New Zealand and what Air New Zealand can do for us."

Mr Sanderson said there were 343 domestic flights to Queenstown Airport in October, 44 more than the same month in 2007.

There were 362 international flights during the month, up 51.
