Eight boxes and six reusable shopping bags laden with food and more than $70 in donations were collected by the Wakatipu Lions Club, Frankton Volunteer Fire Brigade and St John Wakatipu for the Salvation Army last Tuesday night.

About 10 club members, four firefighters and an ambulance officer hit the streets of Frankton to collect non-perishable Christmas food and treats during the foodbank drive.

Canned fruit, chocolates, potato chips and puddings were among the items given by generous residents.

Firefighters had to leave in their fire appliance to help extinguish the blaze at the Superior Firewoods storage shed, on the Lower Shotover delta, below the eastern end of the Queenstown Airport runway, about 7pm.

Club secretary Liz Taylor said the drive was very successful and well worth doing.

Lions Clubs in other centres had organised drives before, but it was the first one for the Wakatipu branch.

The drive would be repeated next year and would possibly expand to include Kelvin Heights and Lake Hayes Estate.
