Footpath improvements

Arrowtown's footpaths are being improved in time for the foot traffic of holiday season visitors.

An additional pathway running the full length of Devon St and continuing up Cornwall St to Arrowtown Primary School is close to completion.

Queenstown Lakes District Arrowtown councillor Lex Perkins said the pathways followed Arrowtown guidelines and were non-notified because they would not be sealed and remain as compacted gravel.

The "meandering pathway" had been added as part of the primary school's "walk and ride to school programme" and Mr Perkins said it would help with safety for mothers with prams.

"There is no kerbing and channelling in Arrowtown. It is full of swales.

"Having those swales is forcing people to walk on the roads." Mr Perkins said the next step was to add a similar gravelled pathway to Caernarvon St, a popular route for children walking to school.

He would then talk to the Arrowtown Village Association and look at any "black spots" around town that needed attention.

"Any further works will go through historic planning groups."

He outlined the corner of Wiltshire and Hertford Sts (fire station corner) as another problem spot for foot traffic.

Foot traffic had been one of Mr Perkins' main concerns in his push for the overall 40kmh speed limit, which is currently under public consultation until January 13.

He encouraged people to make submissions to the council before this date.

Arrowtown's roads and pathways would be placed in the council's annual plan and 10-year plan, which are also in public consultation until March.
