Having played his 250th and 251st New Zealand Ice Hockey League games last weekend, SkyCity Stampede captain Connor Harrison takes to the Queenstown Ice Arena this weekend to battle his team-mates.

Which might sound odd, but the 32-year-old — apparently nicknamed "oldie"— is playing for the Stampede Legends in a first-time exhibition double-header against the Stampede tomorrow and on Saturday.

The Legends also include Stampede royalty like Simon Glass, Bert Haines and Stampede coach Cam Frear.

"We kind of built Queenstown as being ‘hockey town’ in NZ from those earlier years," Frear says, "and to be able to have some of those guys come back and play against some of the younger guys they looked up to growing up is pretty cool.

"I think two nights of hockey back-to-back will definitely test the fitness, but I’m sure we’ve got a big enough squad that hopefully we should be able to get through unscathed."

Having some older Stampede players join the Legends also gives some younger players more ice time, Frear adds.

Though they are billed as exhibition games, "I think it’s always competitive — they’re two teams of players that don’t like losing".

Puck drop is 7pm both tomorrow and on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Stampede are seven points atop the league table after beating Auckland’s Botany Swarm at home last weekend.

Coinciding with Harrison’s 250th game, they won 10-2 on Friday, but on Saturday, despite being up 3-0 after the first period, they only won 4-3 in overtime.

Frear says Harrison — who also played four seasons for Dunedin Thunder — joins only a handful of 250-game players.

"To be able to play that many games, especially the way Connor plays — he plays a very physical brand of hockey — is a huge testament to him."

It is also Harrison’s first season captaining the Stampede — "he’s done a great job so far".

In other ice hockey, the Wakatipu Wild women’s team were thrashed by Auckland Steel in away games last weekend, 8-0 and 11-3.

Two players have now notched up their 75th games for the Wild in recent weeks — goaltender Jordan Wichman and Gabby Mills.
