Originally from Tonga, Junior Apolosi, 55, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which has since spread, six weeks ago.
Known for his infectious smile, caring nature and affable personality, he has been a much-loved member of Queenstown’s community for the past 30 years.
Sister-in-law Cheryl Robertson, who organised the sold-out fundraiser, attended by 243 ticket-goers, says thanks to spirited bidding on generously-donated auction items, at least $100k was raised on the night alone — the live auction was called by Whitefox’s Kate Fairmaid.
As of this morning, the Givealittle page had raised more than $91,300.
All funds raised are going to support Junior, his wife Kerri and children Lexi-Ray, 16, Pipa, 14, and Robbie, 8, — "obviously they’re down two salaries", Cheryl says.
The support has left them "pretty humbled".
Contrary to what people might think, "when you go around there it is actually not doom and gloom, we sit around and we do have some laughs which is really nice".
Though Junior is undergoing chemo, "we know it’s not a cure, it’s purely to see if can put the handbrakes on and give him some extra time with his family".
