Great day on offer at A and P

The Lake Hayes Agricultural and Pastoral Show is back tomorrow for its 94th year, with traditional livestock and produce sections, horse jumping, sideshows and trade displays from around the South Island.

The gates open and trade displays will be set up at 7.30am, judging of hack and pony classes is at 8.30am followed by the judging of the sheep section at 9.30am, the time when the entries close for pavilion exhibitors.

Pavilion sections include vegetables, children's arts and crafts, baking, children's baking, preserves, cut flowers, decorative flower arrangements and amateur photography with the theme "My Best Friend".

Judging of exhibits will be from 10am.

Displays of logger sports start at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

The judging of Mt Rosa supreme sheep and showjumping starts at 11am followed by the grand parade at noon.

Dog trials are held in the show ring at 2.30pm, then showjumping continues and a pipe band strikes up at 3pm.

A roaming entertainer, trade displays, food stalls, sideshows and a tent selling beer, wine and refreshments will operate throughout the day.

Lake County A and P Society president Craig Nesbit, of Arrowtown, said about 40 trades would set up stall and more exhibitors were expected to book in the run-up.

The number of horse entries were on a par with last year and the overall show was a "great day out for the family", he said.

"They can look forward to plenty of trades to look at, we've got a woodchopping exhibition and we've got a very good clown called Shad back to entertain the kids.

They'll be some sideshows there [like] merry-go-rounds and refreshments and something to eat in hospitality tents," Mr Nesbit said.

Admission is $5 per adult, $3 per child, $15 for a family and free for under five-year-olds.

Parking is free.
