`High-end' Carisbrook game bid backed

The Queenstown Lakes District Council will support Dunedin's bid to get a "high end" All Black game played at Carisbrook during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Mayor Clive Geddes told a district council meeting on Friday the Otago-Southland proposal - which included matches in Invercargill, Queenstown and Dunedin - aimed to get five games played in the Otago-Southland area.

"We are not bidding for a quarter final, but [we] are supporting Christchurch in its bid.

"We are bidding for a high end match from the All Black's pool . . . to be played at Carisbrook.

"We think that is a very pragmatic offer."

Mr Geddes said it was hoped at least one team involved in the Rugby World Cup would be based in Queenstown.
