Identity dies at 96

Long-time Queenstown resident Paddy Mathias died at the Lake Wakatipu Home and Hospital on Wednesday morning.

Mr Mathias (96) lived at Arthurs Point for more than 50 years.

Born in 1913 in Lawrence, he first went to school at Tuapeka West and became a shearer in the Maniototo when he was 16.

He never owned a television but was an avid radio listener and newspaper reader. He never owned a car, preferring to ride his bike 6km into Queenstown and the only electricity he used was for his stove, although he preferred to cook on his coal range.

He had lived at the Lake Wakatipu Home since October 2008. His funeral will be held at the Arrowtown Anglican Church at 2pm on Monday.
