New Zealand's achievement in the World Cup, the introduction of "twilight" five-a-side football and the launch of a successful girls' team at Wakatipu High School last year, were factors in the popularity of the Queenstown Junior Football Club's registration day, yesterday.

More than 150 youngsters signed up with club committee members in the Queenstown Events Centre.

Club treasurer Rebecca Read said there had been a steady stream of parents and children completing registration forms and browsing the football kit sales all day.

Ms Read said there were a lot of new faces, as well as returning members.

The ratio between boys and girls was estimated to be 80 to 20, whereas a few years ago the split was more like 99 to 1, she said.

Registrations continue on the club's website until February 28.

Training starts on March 16 and games begin on April 3 and continue on Sundays for the season.
