A working bloke needs a working bloke lunch and now one Queenstown woman has the answer for those on the outskirts of town with her new takeaway lunch cafe.

Gay Sheenan had been working her takeaway coffee van, called the Drive By Espresso, in Queenstown's industrial area when she noticed a lack of lunch options for the working boys.

She thought it was time to do something about it.

"I had been working my mobile coffee car and a lot of the guys asked if I carried food with me, but I hadn't [any].

"I then noticed this nice little empty building across the road."

So that nice little building at 1 Industrial Pl is now Ava Cafe, where Ms Sheenan serves up pies, sandwiches, sausage rolls, cheese rolls and plenty more hearty options for hungry working men and women.

If you think this sounds a little southern influenced, then you would be right - Ms Sheenan has had 25 years' experience in the food industry, from Invercargill to Te Anau.

She has served at Coupland's Bakeries, Barnabys Cafe and Artworks Cafe in Invercargill and the Jail House Cafe in Te Anau - now known as the Olive Tree.

The food is all supplied daily from Bakers Beyond, of Invercargill, and so far the steak pies have been very popular among the local boys.

Food is all new to Ms Sheenan's partner, Martin West, and she said he might just have to take a back seat for the beginning.

"There would be more froth on the roof when Martin's making coffee."

Only three months new to town, Ms Sheenan is looking forward to making her mark.

"It isn't working when you're making coffee; you're meeting people and having a good time."
