Lone Star-struck cafe serves tennis legend

American tennis great Andre Agassi enjoyed his dining experience so much at Queenstown's Lone Star Cafe, he came back for seconds.

Agassi asked for off-menu grilled chicken breast fillet steak and cos lettuce salad dishes on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The former world tennis number one snowboarded on Coronet Peak on Monday afternoon.

He was dining with a male friend from about 6pm and stayed for about an hour on both evenings.

"Pistol Pete" Gordon, one of the Lone Star head waiters, catered for Agassi and his companion on Tuesday and maitre'd Jules Fitzgerald looked after them on Wednesday.

Mr Fitzgerald said Mr Gordon's explanation of his nickname broke the ice with the winner of eight Grand Slams as it was also the nickname of Pete Sampras.

"Someone called before to check it was OK and if he could fly under the radar. He came back again so we must have done something right.

"They were very polite and thoughtful and it was quite nice to have them here."

Mr Fitzgerald said the tennis hero did not attract much attention from fellow patrons on Tuesday.

Several recognised him on Wednesday but left him in peace and staff were keen to see him without being intrusive.

Agassi did not ask for special treatment and was "quite generous both nights" with tips, Mr Fitzgerald said.
