A Wanaka man was last night being assessed by medical staff for injuries received when he was knocked unconscious in a single-vehicle crash on Maungawera Hill on State Highway 6, between Wanaka and Lake Hawea.

Wanaka and Lake Hawea emergency services are pictured attending to the crash victim.

The crash occurred about 6pm just over the top of the hill on the Wanaka side and involved just one person and one vehicle, a four-wheel-drive.

The injured man had regained consciousness and could move and talk but the extent of his injuries were unknown, Senior Constable Ian Henderson said.

It appeared the vehicle had left the road and hit a grass verge before crossing back over the road and ending up on its roof on the opposite grass verge, he said.

Police, St John Wanaka and volunteer fire brigades from Lake Hawea and Wanaka attended the accident.

The road was closed for about 15 minutes while the patient was being attended to.
