Meeting to discuss future of domain

"Regeneration" of the Hawea Domain will be discussed at a community meeting tonight.

The idea to look at "how to renew some life into what is a community facility" arose from a community-driven Shaping Our Future forum in Hawea last week, Hawea Flat resident and forum co-facilitator Steve Henry said.

"Part of that was a discussion about what we wanted the place to look like in 50 years' time. What community assets have we got and how are they being used?" Mr Henry said.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council-owned domain is about 40ha of recreation reserve, mostly leased as farmland for grazing. It is used once a year by the Hawea Picnic Racing Club for its long-running post-Christmas meet.

"That's a very historical event ... and we have no intention of stopping that event. We just want to see it built on," Mr Henry said.

A community garden or community farm are among the ideas already suggested to "help regenerate the domain" and community involvement.

Queenstown Lakes District Council project manager Ken Gousmett, who is heavily involved with the development of the Wanaka Sports Facility, said the Hawea Domain had been earmarked for sports opportunities.

"Not tomorrow, not in the near future, but it's going to be very valuable as that area grows," Mr Gousmett said.

He said as Upper Clutha communities grew, the domain would become "more central" for the area.

The meeting to discuss the domain's use will be held at 7:30pm at the Hawea Flat Hall.
