A Wanaka emergency services attended four car crashes yesterday morning, the result of treacherous driving conditions and icy roads.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said emergency services were called at 4am to assist the driver of a four-wheel-drive Toyota Hilux which had crashed and overturned on ice near the Albert Town bridge.

Constable Mel Twyman attended two non-injury car crashes - one on State Highway 6, between Lake Hawea and Albert Town at 7am, and another two hours later at Queensberry.

In a fourth accident, a 21-year-old female driver received minor injuries after she lost control of her car, and hit a bank on the Tarras-Luggate road about 10am.

"It is patently clear people are driving too fast for the conditions," Snr Sgt Grindell said.

An elderly Ranfurly man was taken to Maniototo Hospital yesterday with minor injuries after his car rolled on a sweeping bend between Omakau and Poolburn.

Omakau Deputy Chief Fire Officer Lloyd Harris said the mid-morning accident happened in "treacherous" conditions, near the bottom of the Poolburn side of Blacks Hill, He said the alarm was raised after a Poolburn woman on her way to golf saw movement in the car, which was in a paddock, and went to investigate.

New Zealand Transport Agency Central Otago area manager John Jarvis said yesterday black-ice warning lights were operating at two sites on the Lindis Pass and were not "flashing" at the Kawarau Gorge sites, which featured in yesterday's story.

Motorists should not expect to see the flashing lights in all other black ice-prone areas, he said.

• The NZTA's annual winter maintenance budget for the southern region is $500,000, not $50,000 as published yesterday.
