Paraglider injured in heavy landing

A paraglider was injured in a heavy landing on Treble Cone yesterday.

The man was retrieved by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter just after 7pm and was flown to Dunedin Hospital, a dispatcher for St John southern region confirmed last night.

The man was in a stable condition in an orthopaedic ward last night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Wanaka police were alerted to the incident about 5pmyesterday, sparking a search and rescue operation.

About 18 paragliders and speed flyers from around New Zealand have been in the district for several days, enjoying an informal get together or "boogie".

They have been flying at Treble Cone, Lake Hawea and Queenstown.

Constable Mike Johnston, of Wanaka, said the man hit the ground 200m after taking off from Pub Corner, on the Treble Cone skifield access road.

The man had suspected pelvic and lower back injuries, Const Johnston said.
