Today
7pm
: Queenstown singer-pianist-trumpeter Alastair Monteath plays standards for the Friday Jazz Club in Les Alpes. Free.

7.30pm: Solo singer-guitarist Sahara McDonald and singer-guitarist duo Lucy and Izzy, with youth bands the Alpine Effect, the Collective Me and the Fletcherz, compete in the ticketed grand final of the Ultimate Battle of the Musos in the Youth Booth.

Judges will choose which act will win the chance to record its song professionally in Studio 183, Frankton. Other prizes available include a warm-up slot on the New Year's Eve main stage and vouchers for It Might Get Loud music store.

Tickets cost $5 and can be bought in the Youth Booth, Stanley St. Doors open at 7pm.

10pm: Self-described "whacked-out garage rock" four-piece Phoney Dog, from Invercargill, promote their debut EP around the South Island, including Dux de Lux. Free.

Saturday
2pm and 8pm
: The last two chances to watch satirical comedy The Female of the Species by Remarkable Theatre in the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. Tickets cost $29 per person and are for sale in the Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown, i-Site Queenstown Visitor Centre and on the door.

7pm: The New Zealand Alpine Club invites renowned Canadian waterfall ice climber and mountaineer Barry Blanchard to the Lake Wanaka Centre as part of a tour.

Blanchard specialised in technical winter ascents in the Canadian Rockies and in lightweight alpine expeditions in the world's highest ranges for more than 30 years.

He is an internationally certified mountain guide and worked as a climbing adviser and safety rigger on Hollywood films.

Tickets cost $25, or $20 for club members, from Adventure Consultants, Wanaka, or via the club's website.

Thursday
8pm
: NIMA Entertainment presents California Dreaming, starring a wealth of Wakatipu musical and dramatic acting talent and written and directed by Margaret O'Hanlon (Rock and Roll Suicide, London Calling).

A rock star, a film star and a cult leader converge at the "Peoples Park Sit-in" anti-war rally in Berkeley, California, in 1969. The music of Jefferson Airplane, the Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, Burt Bacharach, Santana, the Doors and many others is sung and played live in the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall until Saturday, October 6.

Tickets cost $40 from the Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown, i-Site Queenstown Visitor Centre and on the door.
