The Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group, the Department of Conservation (Doc) and the Queenstown Lakes District Council spent more than $637,000 on the war against wilding pines in the year ended April 30.

The $402,000 from the charitable community group, including $129,000 from the council, plus $235,000 from the department, was $9000 more than in the previous financial year.

The group controlled and cleared 7397ha of land in the Wakatipu Basin during the year. An area of 10,000ha was dealt with the previous year.

An information panel, titled "Restoring our heritage", is being installed at Roaring Meg by Doc today, to inform the public of the wilding threat.

The group and its partners sprayed 190ha of pines in the Roaring Meg area and more work was to come, chief executive and district forester Briana Pringle said yesterday.

The third birthday of the group was celebrated by 70 members and guests at the Skyline on Monday night.

The group's new website - www.wakatipuwilding.co.nz - was launched to raise awareness of what it does and encourage membership.

Interested individuals can become members by registering on the website.

They will receive a bumper sticker which states, "We don't hate the trees. We love the scenery."
