To Ken Hood’s knowledge, he has the only photos of Queenstown steamer SS Ben Lomond being scuttled in Lake Whakatipu’s Kingston arm on October 28, 1952.
Ken, who turned 11 that day, says his dad used the camera he’d just bought him — the photos were taken from the Earnslaw, which had towed her fellow steamer down the lake.
"They’re the only photos there are, no one else was around."
Launched on the lake as Jane Williams, in 1872, she changed her name to Ben Lomond in 1886. She’d been operated by New Zealand Railways since 1903, and was withdrawn from service the year before she was sunk.
