Report on town centre strategy

A concept design for Ardmore and Brownston Sts, part of Wanaka's town centre strategy, has been completed.

In a monitoring report to the Queenstown Lakes District Council's strategy committee, senior policy analyst Sue Mavor said the design was the first stage of improvements to transport links.

Stage two involves the building of a controversial roundabout at the intersection of the two streets, also known as "Caltex corner".

This is on hold while council staff discuss the design with the New Zealand Transport Agency and adjoining landowners.

Meanwhile, policy planners are working on a proposed plan change to deal with parking, including cycle parks.

They are also working on design guidelines for the town centre, which may be ready as early as February, Ms Mavor told the board.

Once the non-statutory design guidelines were available, progress could be made on modifying the district plan flood provisions and redefining building height rules.

Detailed designs and construction work for the lake front reserve are on hold, due to budget constraints, Ms Mavor said.

Priorities for the central business district to October include the roundabout, improving pedestrian connections, creating campervan parks and changes to the four public car parks.

Also on the list is finalising the urban design guidelines and plan changes.

The long-term strategy was approved last month and provides a blueprint for property owners to measure developments over the next 20 years.
