Seeking road less travelled

Travelling from Cardrona to Makarora or from Tarras to Glendhu Bay without setting foot, or bicycle tyre or horse's hoof on a road is the vision contained in a newly completed strategy for tracks in the Upper Clutha.

The idea of connecting all communities in the area with off-road tracks is one of the main aims of the Upper Clutha Tracks Network.

It suggests a network that provides ''a viable alternative to vehicle transport'' and includes commuter tracks, back country tracks, alpine bike tracks and horse trails.

Network member Brent Harridge said the purpose of the volunteer group was not to build tracks but to co-ordinate the efforts of organisations such as the Queenstown Lakes District Council, Department of Conservation, Upper Clutha Tracks Trust, Bike Wanaka and Lake Wanaka Tourism.

The strategy lists 70 tracks in the district, from the well known, such as the Millennium track, alongside Lake Wanaka, to lesser known, such as the Dry Creek track at Ardgour, Tarras.
