Sewage spill closes part of walkway

A sewage spill has closed a section of the Outlet walking track, which runs beside the Clutha River and Lake Wanaka.

A press release from the Queens town Lakes District Council said a 3m wide flow of spilled sewage flowed 50m across a private prop erty and over the walking track, near Bremner Bay, yesterday.

A member of the public alerted QLDC contractors, who moved into the area before noon to contain the spill and stop sewage from entering Lake Wanaka, council spokeswoman Meaghan Miller said.

It was estimated about 9000 litres of sewage was spilled.

Acting water services manager John Porter said the spill was caused by a blockage.  The town end of the outlet walking track is closed while the area is disinfected, he said.

He anticipated the closed section of track would be able to be re opened sometime today, Mr Porter said.
