Silver medals from Timaru

The Queenstown Masters women's hockey team picked up silver medals at the weekend at the South Island Masters competition, which was held in Timaru.

The Queenstown side started the tournament with two convincing wins on Saturday, with standout performances from Gilly Hindley, who scored three goals, and goalkeeper Fiona Lattimore.

The team combined well on Sunday, holding Pleasant Point to a 2-2 draw, but tired legs in the fourth game saw the over-40s lose 4-1 to the well-prepared Christchurch side.

• One member of the Queenstown side, Judy Nelson, recently returned from the World Masters, held in Canterbury, in England, with a bronze medal.

Nelson (51) captained the over-50s New Zealand team.

Among the countries represented at the tournament were Australia, South Africa, Singapore, United States and a strong European contingent.
