Queenstown education providers are launching a website to promote the resort as an education destination.

The website - www.studyqueenstown.com - is due to open before Christmas.

Queenstown Resort College chief executive Charlie Phillips is the driving force behind the initiative. He told the Queenstown Times he had the idea when he met representatives from Wakatipu High School and two of the Queenstown-based language schools at an Asian trade fair in Auckland earlier this year.

"We agreed that a co-ordinated effort would benefit all of us. Back home we met to discuss our approach, and this resulted in the decision to initially create a website," Mr Phillips said.

The website will have general information about Queenstown and local activities. There will be descriptions of each education provider involved in the venture, rather than links to each study institution's own website.

"The idea is to promote Queenstown as a serious study destination. I don't think many people are aware that you can study all the way from preschool and primary school through to degree level here."

He said the primary target group would be international students, but the website would also cater for domestic and local people interested in the education sector.

So far, most of the administration and co-ordination has been done by Queenstown Resort College, while the web design was contracted to a local company.

"The cost of establishing and running the website will be equally shared by all involved.

"The next step will be to look at further marketing initiatives, and how this will be organised and paid for," Mr Phillips said.

To date, the Queenstown Primary School, Wakatipu High School, ABC College of English, Southern Lakes English College, Language Schools NZ, Otago Polytechnic, Southern Institute of Technology and Queenstown Resort College had all agreed to take part. Mr Phillips hoped every education facility in the region would join the initiative.

Destination Queenstown marketing general manager Graham Budd called the scheme "terrific".

"DQ had never considered promoting the region specifically as an education destination in a tourism context. But they have a good point," Mr Budd said.

"It is important the sector works together to make their stand. We will be looking at adding an education section to the Destination Queenstown website in co-operation with this group's website."
