Sports facility progress

Progress has been made on securing land for Wanaka's proposed $10 million sports facility, with agreements between two landowners and the Queenstown Lakes District Council due to be signed.

However, land transfers might still be four years away, which could delay construction, but there are hopes the transfer date could be brought forward.

Queenstown Lakes District Council community services general manager Paul Wilson will update the Wanaka Community Board and the public on progress at the board's meeting on Tuesday.

The council resolved in March that land straddling Three Parks and North Three Parks development sites was the preferred location for the sports facility.

"We are now at a point of signing draft agreements with the landowner and close to having a more definitive conversation with users and the community about the facility mix," Mr Wilson said in a media release yesterday.

His report to next week's meeting notes the council cannot start building until the land transfers are done.

Willowridge Developments Ltd's agreement is to transfer the land within four years of signing the agreement, while the agreement with Ballantyne Investments Ltd is for a transfer within a year of a plan change becoming operative.

Mr Wilson said planning and design would continue with the expectation the wait might be reduced with the co-operation of Willowridge and subject to the council being able to fund the project sooner.

Capital works manager Ken Gousmett has been appointed project manager.

The project team includes recreation planner David Allan, of Global Leisure, landscape architect Jeremy Cooke, of Beca Consultants, and resource planner Chris Ferguson, of Ferguson Planners.
