A respected international architect’s giving a free presentation in Queenstown tonight, as part of the Sir Ian Athfield Memorial Lecture series, ‘The Past Needs a Future’.

Ian Moore, principal of Ian Moore Architects, established in 1990, will focus on adaptive reuse during his presentation, which is being held at the Crowne Plaza.

Organised by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, the lecture series, which has eight stops all over NZ, commemorates the late Ian ‘Ath’ Athfield, one of the country’s most influential architects, who was knighted in 2014.

He won more than 60 national and international architecture and design awards — the lecture series was established to honour his legacy, and celebrate his larrikin spirit.

Moore’s practice has won numerous Australian and international awards and has been published and exhibited widely, including at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008 and 2012.

After studying civil and structural engineering at the Auckland Technical Institute, Moore studied architecture at the University of Technology in Sydney, graduating with honours in 1988.

He’s subsequently taught at numerous universities, has been a speaker and guest lecturer across Australia and internationally, was the inaugural creative director for the Australian Institute of Architects annual conference, and has been a member of awards juries in Australia and NZ and at the 2013 World Festival of Interiors and the 2015 World Architecture Festival.

Doors open at 5pm tonight — Moore’s lecture will start at 5.30pm, followed by a Q&A at 6.30pm; register via Eventbrite
