Subdivision opponents fail to attend hearing

Submitters opposed to a proposed two-lot subdivision near Wanaka Airport failed to appear at a resource consent hearing in the resort yesterday.

Wanaka farmer John Roberts' application, to subdivide 6.1004ha in two at his farm on State Highway 6 between Luggate and Wanaka, was opposed by three submitters.

The Wanaka Airport management committee (WAMC), the Upper Clutha Environmental Society (UCES), and Helen Tait and John Morris opposed the proposal for various reasons.

Ms Tait and Mr Morris and the UCES were opposed because a new building platform would create potential adverse affects on the natural rural landscape.

The airport was opposed on the grounds that future lot buyers and residents would object to airport noise, expansion, and runway plans.

The airport sought a condition, secured against land title, which would prohibit the applicant from standing against council or airport plans.

All three opposition submitters asked to he heard by independent commissioners at the hearing, but all failed to attend.

A report submitted by Lakes Environmental planner Robyn Johnstone to the commissioners recommended that the application be granted.

The commissioners reserved their decision to consider conditions put forward by Mr Roberts.
