Traffic problems aplenty

Queenstown police have been busy dealing with traffic incidents this week.

Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown, said a driver ''fishtailed'' on a ''very slippery'' Malaghans Rd near Arthur's Point and crashed into a bank at 9.23am on Tuesday.

The driver was not injured.

Later in the morning, police received three complaints about visitors' driving.

The complaints ranged from slow driving to crossing the centre line.

Two of the drivers received infringement notices and one was warned.

At 11.15am on Tuesday, a tourist in a rental car had parked the wrong way on Hobart St and then tried to ''manoeuvre out'', only to hit a parked car.

Police inquiries are continuing but Sgt Pirovano said the rental car company did not replace the vehicle for the driver.

At 5.15pm on Tuesday, a 28-year-old man from India was reportedly passing on blind corners in the Kawarau Gorge. He was arrested and charged with driving offences.

A four-car nose-to-tail crash awaited police at the Queenstown Events Centre yesterday morning at 9.35am.

No-one was injured but vehicles were moderately damaged and the driver believed to be at fault, a Queenstown woman, was issued with an infringement notice.

Ten minutes later on the Kawarau Falls Bridge, between Frankton and Kelvin Heights, a freight truck's trailer coupling detached, and the one-lane bridge was blocked for about four minutes while the trailer was reattached, Sgt Pirovano said.

She said that when this happened, trucks' brakes were designed to automatically come on.

The truck driver, who was heading south, was likely to face prosecution, Sgt Pirovano said.
