Kahu Youth Trust workers Tarn Felton, Eddie Spearing, and Richard Elvey secured a promise from the Wanaka Community Board yesterday to back a series of street closures around the town allowing the proposed parade.
The Kahu Youth organisers wanted to bring back the annual springtime street parade, which was cancelled this year when Wanakafest decided to postpone their 2008 event because of funding issues.
However, it took some convincing from the Spring Youth Parade organisers to ensure Wanaka Community Board members backed the proposed street closures.
"I don't want to sound like an old stick-in-the-mud, but it is quite a significant thing to close roads," WCB chairman Lyal Cocks told the three enthusiastic parade organisers.
Ms Felton said Kahu Youth Trust had approached and secured the support of local businesses who wanted to see the parade and "youth-orientated event" go ahead.
"Anything that brings the locals together to celebrate the youth community is a good thing," she told board members.
The street closures for the parade need to be ratified by a full council meeting in Queenstown on Friday, September 26.
Wanaka locals and businesses have supported street parades in the resort since the inaugural Snowfest - later renamed Wanakafest - began.
