Camping out overnight for a year's supply of cookies paid off for a group of 12 pyjama-clad teenage friends in Queenstown this week.

Appropriately, the scene of their vigil on Sunday and Monday was outside the soon-to-be-opened Cookie Time shop in Camp St.

The first customer was Alana Potts, of Frankton, who had dressed for the occasion in one-piece pyjamas.

"A group of us got the idea to camp out here. It was a cold night, but we had plenty of blankets. I am sure my hungry flatmates will help me get through the cookies," Miss Potts said.

All 12 friends who had spent the night outside the shop got their year's supply of cookies, and they had fun meeting the Weta Workshop-designed store mascot Cookie Muncher, which duly opened the shop - Cookie Time's first venture outside Christchurch - at 8am.

Cookie Time general manager Lincoln Booth said the idea to create a dedicated cookie shop had been six months in the making.

The store's franchise owner, Verity Richard, has worked for Cookie Time since she started as a receptionist 16 years ago.

"When they approached me with the idea of starting a franchise business, I thought it was a great opportunity.

I moved to Queenstown three weeks ago with my family, and it has been extremely hectic getting the shop ready for opening day," Ms Richard said.

Finance manager Chris White, from Cookie Time, hoped the shop would appeal to both residents and tourists.

"Queenstown's many visitors can now experience a South Island brand, and take a tasty bit of New Zealand with them," he said.

The Queenstown Cookie Time Store and Cookie Bar serves freshly baked cookies with cold milk on tap, and also sells bagged cookies.

Customers can also pick and mix a bucket load of their favorite cookies.

Touch screens on the walls allow customers to set up their own profile or see highlights of the company's 27-year history.
