State Highway 6 was blocked by slips at two places but reopened in the afternoon.
In one incident, a slip shut the highway at the Fox Hills, between Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, and in another, the highway was blocked 30km south of Haast.
A New Zealand Transport Agency spokeswoman said heavy rain was continuing to fall on the West Coast, and a new front was expected at 6pm last night.
''Motorists are being asked to take care with considerable surface flooding on roads in the region and many rivers still running high.''
NZME. reported yesterday afternoon heavy rain and strong winds would continue for parts of the South Island over the weekend and into next week.
On Saturday another front is expected to move northeast over the lower South Island and the MetService said heavy rain was likely in Westland and Fiordland.
At the beginning of next week, an intense trough is expected to approach the country from the west, bringing heavy rain to Fiordland, Westland and Buller.
And the Greymouth Star reported yesterday rivers were rising and roads were being closely monitored throughout South Westland as a northwest front continued to lash the district.
Westland District Council emergency manager Vern Morris said at 11.20am the Hokitika River was rising, although Wadeson Island was only partly covered.
Field inspections officer John Bainbridge, speaking from Franz Josef Glacier, said the Waiho River had passed the stage-3 flood warning but the floodbanks were continuing to hold.
By 11.30am yesterday Franz Josef Glacier had copped 245mm of rain in about 20 hours.
