Plans are under way for the next annual Real Women's Duathlon at Millbrook Resort.

The organisers are planning to close Malaghans Rd for the event on March 21.

Ted Pearce Event Services Ltd has applied to the Queenstown Lakes District Council to close the road temporarily, and the council will discuss the closure at its meeting today.

The application says the closure was needed to hold "this popular annual event in a safe and productive manner".

It has applied to close Malaghans Rd, from Manse Rd to Hunter Rd, from 9am to 11am.

A report to councillors by Libby Sudden, of Lakes Environmental, says the event has been run "very smoothly with no traffic problems for the past two years".

Organisers had designed a traffic management plan which was lodged with the council's infrastructure services department for approval.

They would distribute a letter in early March to residents on the road advising of the closure and suggesting an alternative route, and place detour signs directing traffic around the closed road.

Ms Sudden recommended council approve the road closure subject to three conditions.

•  Approval of the final traffic management plan by the council's infrastructure services department.

•  Radio advertising two days prior and on the morning of the event.

• The event organisers arranging suitable disposal methods for rubbish/refuse and recycling.
