60 speeding drivers caught

More than 60 motorists have been issued with tickets for speeding on Wanaka's rural roads during an ongoing police traffic operation.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said the two-week long "Operation Interceptor" fin-ishes tomorrow and the focus of traffic patrols will shift towards a drink-driving campaign to coincide with the approaching festive season.

Despite the number of tickets issued to speeding drivers, police "overall" were satisfied with the results of the campaign.

Cardrona Valley Rd was where the most motorists were caught speeding, including one driver ticketed for recording 138kmh, the highest speed during the campaign, Snr Sgt Grindell said.

State Highway 8A, between Tarras and Luggate, and SH6 were also rural hotspots for speeding drivers, he said.

"Generally traffic flows haven't been too bad. We're certainly not disappointed with the number of infringement notices issued," he said.

Police traffic patrols will also be keeping an eye on the speed of motorists driving around local schools and bus drop-off points during the last week of the final term, Snr Sgt Grindell said.
