Alert on landslip dam and lake lifted

A high-alert warning for the Young Valley in Mount Aspiring National Park will be officially lifted this morning.

The alert was placed on the area on Friday by the Department of Conservation, after MetService issued a heavy-rain warning for Otago headwaters.

Warning signs were placed at visitor centres and entrances to the Gillespie Pass track, near Makarora, advising trampers against camping on the valley floor and to move through the area as quickly as possible.

A landslip dam and lake which formed in the Young River in September 2007 is considered a potential risk to public safety in heavy rain.

Doc staff monitored the situation throughout the weekend, in case it escalated to a "code red", which would mean banning the public from the valley.

However, Doc Wanaka community relations manager Annette Grieve said the lake had not reached concerning levels, and the high alert was "unofficially" lifted yesterday.

The warning signs would be removed this morning, and the status of the valley would officially return to normal.
