Queenstown boxing coach and personal trainer Michael Jenner isn’t just putting on an entertaining fight night on Saturday — he’s hoping the event will help raise awareness of, and generate some funds for, mental health support in the community.

He’s expecting to sell out the Shotover Primary School gymnasium for the ‘Kia Kaha Tāhuna Boxing & Muay Thai Fight Night’ on Saturday.

It’ll feature up to a dozen fights across the two disciplines, with 10% of the proceeds going to the Mental Health Foundation.

Jenner says combat sports can be an effective outlet for those dealing with mental health challenges, just as it has been for his own struggles with depression.

In his work as a coach and trainer, he’s been able to share his experiences with others undergoing "silent struggles".

"Boxing’s provided me with a safe space, and a pathway to being able to dive deeper into my mental health issues."

Most of the fighters on Saturday night’s card are locals who’ve never fought in front of a crowd before.

Ranging in age from 18 to 50, they’re members of several gyms and training outfits in Queenstown, along with a few fighters from Invercargill to ensure even match-ups, he says.

"It’s been a collaboration of everyone across the brands, just bringing it together for the show."

The fighters have undergone seven weeks of training, with the boxers having three sessions a week with him, and the Muay Thai fighters training three times a week with coach Diego Beneduzzi.
