While many said it with breakfast in bed, chocolates or a meal out, others told their mothers they loved them with flowers, simultaneously raising money for St John.

Queenstown florists Wild Poppies and In the Pink took orders for Mother's Day to have the bouquet delivered by an ambulance, the $10 delivery charge going towards St John operation costs at the Frankton Station.

Ian Harvey, of St John, said it had been a ''beautiful'' day.

''[The reaction] is one of shock because they've got an ambulance driving up ... then a massive smile when they see the flowers.

''It's been lovely.''
