The family of the late Kate Moetaua are keeping her memory alive with grants to eight Wakatipu High School pupils.

Teaukura Moetaua and daughters Anika (15), Aya (11) and Malia (9) are sharing $4000 between the six girls and two boys to support their efforts in touch rugby, football, ice hockey, drama, art, athletics and the performing arts.

Mrs Moetaua, head of drama and a house dean at the school, died last November, aged 45, after a year-long battle with melanoma.

Later that month, the Kate Moetaua Foundation Endowment Fund was set up by the Wakatipu Community Foundation.

Its coffers were soon being filled by thousands of dollars from crowdfunding, and got a $45,000 boost at a charity day at The Hills golf course in April.

Mr Moetaua said he and his daughters met the applicants individually last week with the intention of "narrowing them down".

"We've been a bit naughty. We couldn't leave anyone out, so everyone got something."

The two top recipients, Hera Winders and Hayato Yoneto, will be presented with $800 each at the Wayfare Spirit of the Wakatipu Gala and Awards at the Queenstown Memorial Centre this Saturday.

The other recipients are Nieve Collin, Grace Hastie, Helena Hornbacher, Sophie Thompson, Marco Hartono and Olive Watherston.

One of his wife's final wishes was that a foundation be set up to support aspiring young artists and sports people, he said.

He and his daughters were determined to continue her legacy of helping the youth of the Wakatipu for as long as possible.

"It's sad as well - the reason why we're doing this - but to be able to do it is amazing.

"Kate would be very proud of what we're doing."
