Hospital evacuated in Queenstown

Queenstown's Lakes District Hospital was evacuated today after a burning smell activated a fire alarm.

In a media statement, a Southern District Health Board manager, Mary Cleary Lyons, said patients and staff were evacuated from the complex and firefighters were investigating the smell.

The hospital is back to normal operation except for the ward, whose patients will return there after it is aired out.

No fire or flames had been observed, she said.

Firefighters have now left the scene.
