The developer of the $20million Frankton marina says construction is on track, and land-based buildings, a car park and landscaping will be completed by Christmas.

The breakwater and 80-90 berths are expected to be in place by the middle of next year, Alan Kirker says.

Lakes Marina Projects (LMP) is creating 187 floating berths, 17 floating sheds, four other structures, the breakwater and a 156-space car park.

LMP is 90% owned by Iranian-born entrepreneurs and brothers Iraj and Nasser Barabi, from California's Silicon Valley.

Ground works began last November.

Mr Kirker, who is a 10% partner in LMP and is managing the project, said the construction phase had been enjoyable to date.

''It hasn't been a painful process at all.''

Contractor Fulton Hogan was performing civil works and Bellingham Marine was carrying out the offshore work.

''We've got all the stops pulled out at the moment.''

LMP is leasing the berths, ranging from eight to 18 metres long, for a minimum of about $8000 a year.

Mr Kirker said about 130 people had expressed interest in berths, although leasing agreements would not be signed until after the berths were in place.
