A Christchurch pole dancer successfully defended her title at the 2019 Miss Pole Dance NZ competition in Queenstown on Friday.

Organiser Raha Sangsari said Oliva Andersen's performance before a big crowd at the Queenstown Memorial Centre was "flawless, smooth and beautiful".

Andersen was among 16 dancers from throughout New Zealand, chosen from 28 video entries, competing for the title.

Michelle Muscles, also of Christchurch, was runner-up, and Hamilton's Laura Lockhart was third.

It is the second year Ms Sangsari, who owns Queenstown Pole Studio, has run the competition.

The highlight of the night for her was watching one of her students, Lucille Lebowski, use stilts in her performance.

"I've ... never seen that before."

The evening featured a performance by one of the judges, Australian Adam Lin, a two-time winner of the international Mr Pole Dance competition.
