Queenstown's swimming pool facility reopened yesterday with a temporary ceiling, following work to remove dangerous tiles.

The Alpine Aqualand's four pools, lazy river, hydroslides and spa pool were closed to the public on November 19 so the tiles could be removed after several failed and fell into the pool.

A smattering of people used the leisure pool, children's pool and slides on Boxing Day. The 25m lap pool will take three to four days to return to the correct temperature. The spa pool remains closed and lessons are yet to restart in the learners' pool.

Amber Smith, of Dunedin, watched on as her father Roy Smith, of Kingston, took her son Freddie Ruscheinsky for a swim and slide.

''We were pretty stoked to find it open today,'' she said.

''He loves bringing the grandkids here when they come up.''

All the pools were drained over the past five weeks, scaffolding was erected and about 2000 ceiling tiles removed

The tiles would be replaced and the floor resurfaced during the next scheduled maintenance period.
