Online sales for the first-ever Queenstown Monopoly open to the public today, ahead of its official launch at a special pop-up store, in O’Connells’ Eatspace, at on Tuesday morning.
Organised by the Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce, the board has replaced the traditional streets with a host of the best-known Queenstown businesses, while playing tokens include a skier, a helicopter, a wine barrel, a gondola and a jetboat.
The Community Chest and Chance cards are all iconic things you can do in Queenstown, likely to invoke a few chuckles as players make their way around the board.
At this stage just 4000 are up for grabs, but Chamber boss Sharon Fifield says if there’s enough demand "we will get more".
She’s expecting it’ll go like hotcakes.
Mr Monopoly stopped by Queenstown recently to film a promo for the board, and Fifield says during filming the Chamber team was bombarded with international visitors desperate to get their hands on one.
She notes it ticks just about every box.
"It’s just a win-win — it’s a really good promotional tool for Queenstown, it’s a bit of a collectors’ item as well ... it’s a feel-good gift to buy someone [and] you’re supporting Queenstown business as well."
Boards cost $69.95 each and can be ordered via queenstownchamber.org.nz — boards can be picked up from the pop-up store, which will be open from 11am till 7pm daily until Christmas.
Fifield says the Chamber’s also partnered with Pack & Send, so boards can be shipped within New Zealand and overseas.
