Students from small Queenstown school, St Joseph’s, had the honour last Saturday of representing Central Otago for the first time at the final of a year 6 to 8 children’s literature quiz.

The students beat 33 other schools to represent Central at the final, where they tied for 11th out of 18 teams.

Sienna says visiting Wellington was "really fun", though "the questions were really hard".

Her mum Phena Byrne says "I think their strength was they all had different specialised areas".

"But the way the national final works, it’s all about speed because they’ve got to hit a buzzer to answer the question.

"A lot of the answers they knew, but they just didn’t get fast enough on the buzzer.

"I think some of the teams who had maybe been before knew how to make that work, but it was so much fun for them just being there — they were a very excited team."
