A Wakatipu High School leaver with charitable as well as academic ambitions has won a prestigious scholarship awarded by Queenstown’s Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) branch.

Tess Vermeir has been presented with the annual David Geddes Memorial Scholarship that’s funded by the RSA branch and the family of the late David Geddes, who reformed the branch 20 years ago.

This year the funding lifted from $1000 to $1500.

Tess, 18, has been active at Wakatipu High in sports, the arts, leadership and service.

She played football for both the school and Queenstown Rovers, was involved in school musicals and mentored younger students.

She’s planning to study a conjoint degree in economics and law, hopefully at the University of Sydney, and has aspirations in both financial and human rights law.

"My goal isn’t only to succeed academically, but to use what I learn to support families facing hardship through pro bono work and to contribute positively to communities throughout my life," Tess said at last Friday’s presentation.
