Solstice lunch social success

A packed village hall in Glenorchy hosted some full bellies, thanks to the local Rural Women New Zealand branch.

Two barbecues were going, cakes were spread across several tables and there was plenty of everything in between at the free Midwinter Solstice Long Lunch.

Glenorchy branch president Kate Scott said the idea had come from a Zoom meeting during lockdown.

"We organised it because we felt like the community needed a reason to come together and a lot of people haven’t actually been out and about and seen each other in a long time."

Ms Scott said she had no idea how many people would turn out, they just put up posters and hoped to have enough food.

Donations were made by many individuals, plus Mrs Woolly’s General Store and Bold Peak Lodge.

Glenorchy Brew Co supplied a Red Shed Pilsner for adults to enjoy with their meal.

Rural Women NZ meet five or six times a year for events including a big fundraiser called the Midwinter Dinner.

"I think we probably won’t do it this year, a lot of the fundraising that goes with it is donated prizes from local businesses and I don’t think now is the time to be hitting people up to donate stuff, so I think we will probably put that one on ice this year."

She and the other volunteers hoped to put a smile on people’s faces.
