This large carved boulder, recently installed in Queenstown’s Jardine Park close to Lake Whakatipu, is being launched as a public artwork next week.

It Is part of a New Zealand-wide, 1000-year bench project — Paererewa — that was launched last year.

At the launch, Aera Foundation’s Derek Handley, who conceived the idea, said: "If you think the difference between the last 1000 years was significant, it will be nothing on what we experience in the next 1000 with technology embedded into our brains, even into our eyes.

"Sitting on a bench, I hope, will be a simple act of being human, reminding us of who we are."

Carved into the Kelvin Heights boulder are two elevated seating positions, with a circular hole between them.

Handley’s foundation is partnered in the project by Japanese New Zealander Hideaki Fukutake, whose grandfather started Japan’s famous Benesse Art Site Naoshima on Naoshima Island.

The Queenstown work’s been designed by British architectural studio Nebbia, supported by the British Council NZ & the Pacific.
