Theatre group to perform Greer hostage drama-comedy

A hostage drama-comedy will be staged in Arrowtown this September by the Remarkables Theatre group.

The Female of the Species, written by Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith, is based on the true story of feminist author Germaine Greer being taken hostage in 2000.

The play couples a serious situation with a witty script, which had "tears streaming down" the face of theatre secretary Melanie Grindell when she heard a reading.

Ms Grindell confirmed the play was the group's first choice, but the group had experienced difficulties securing the rights to it.

The group had hoped to name the show two weeks ago but were unsure if they would be performing their first or second choice because of the rights issue.

When spoken to two weeks ago, theatre president Jane Robertson said The Female of the Species had a better male-to-female ratio than the second choice.

Ms Grindell said they "really struggle for males" and always took that into consideration when choosing plays as they "didn't want to shoot ourselves in the foot".

Expressions of interest from potential directors was encouraged from now and auditions for three male and three female roles will be held soon.

Those interested were encouraged to join Remarkables Theatre for updates.
